So, you’ve decided—fuck it, I want to go all in on travel photography. But where do you start?

In the past year, I’ve turned my passion into a full-time career and if I were starting again in 2025, here’s exactly what I’d do to accelerate my journey.

1. Go All In

When I say go all in, I mean fully immersing yourself in travel photography. In 2024, my partner and I took off to Southeast Asia, hopping between Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Japan etc. This experience built my portfolio, my network, and my career.

Now, I get that not everyone can drop everything and travel, but if you can, even for a short while, it’s one of the best investments you can make. It’s not easy—I had to move back in with my Dad to save money—but it was 100% worth it.

2. Do Free Work (A Lot of It)

You need a portfolio, and the best way to build one is to shoot for free. Hotels, portraits, lifestyle, YouTube, Instagram—shoot everything. It’s about stacking up experience and great images.

Free work opens doors. It helps you connect with brands, refine your skills, and figure out what you actually enjoy photographing.

3. Find Your Niche

After shooting everything, you’ll naturally gravitate toward what you love. Maybe you hate shooting hotels. Maybe you love street photography. Once you find your thing, you can focus on it, making it easier to attract clients and opportunities.

4. Connect with Other Creators

Reaching out to other photographers and creators is a game-changer. When I first landed in Bangkok, I connected with a creator named Sean Dalton in Chiang Mai. We met up, shot together, and I learned a ton from him.

You never know who will respond, but reaching out can lead to collaborations, inspiration, and even job opportunities.

5. Join a Community
